I think that the tires have a significant influence on your question. A lot of people recommend the Finnish winter tires, but I never used those. When I lived outside of Chicago, I was the one you saw in the far left lane in a red 99 on the TriState Toll road at around the speed limit on snow while most were in the two outer lanes doing 25-30. The tires were either Pirelli CN36 ['performance' tire in its day] or all-season Pirellis. I had more trouble with snow and ice within two blocks of the house or work, mostly due to overconfidence. Even half way considered building a small snow plow to attach to front end.
Only once did I have a problem on the road - driving through ~5" fresh slush, plowing my way past those in the semi-cleared right lane doing only 25; my speedometer showing 45 - but making no progress; crested hill and on slightly negative camber downhill curve [with nearly bald rear tires and no load in back] did a lazy 180 into the median [no harm]; was moving, but got stuck in spring thaw mud and had to be towed out [foul].
