personally I find the B motor is smoother, and in some ways more reliable - the duplex timing chain is an advantage. The waterpump can be a problem now parts are hard to find, but can last a LONG time if coolant is changed as per schedule, I have a 30yr old car with the original pump..
Waterpump replacement is a pain, but not THAT difficult, if you're very clumsy you can break the jack shaft on removal, (you REALLY don't want to do that..) but this is more likely on later models with cast iron shaft..
