The two stroke powered cars have freewheel to allow the engine to not be used to decelerate the car. The mixer two stroke engines rely completely on fuel flow for lubrication of the major engine bearings. Under decel with the throttle closed there is very little fuel, thus little lubrication by the oil carried in the fuel. A long downhill using engine braking in a mixer two stroke can destroy bearings. Is your shrike a mixer or injection engine? If its a mixer you should pay attention to not using engine load decel very much, and thus run with the freewheel in operation. Others comments about not engaging/disengaging while under load and easing into re-engaging under acceleration are both true. Better ability to not lose what traction you have in slippery conditions is also true. Your car should have the six cog freewheel hub. The oil injection / oil pump stroker engines eliminated the need to add oil to the gas and greatly reduced the risk of lubrication starvation to the bearings.
