I have had this problem before on three different 1977 99's. I always assume it is the injectors leaking slightly which drops fuel pressure and dampens the plugs. The first(and cheapest) fix to try is to remove the injectors (still hooked up to the fuel lines) place the ends in plastic milk jugs with small openings cut in the side. It works best to use two milk jugs with 2 injectors sticking in each jug. Remove the flexible bellow between the intake and the airflow sensor. Hotwire the fuel pump relay so that the pump is running. Using a 10mm socket on the center bolt of the airflow sensor plate, you can lift the plate up all the way to spray fuel in bursts to 'clean' out the injectors. I have found this method to work wonders (at least for 5 -6 months)on the injectors. It is also a good way to oberse the spray patterns.
