Ha ha, welcome to the joy that is the taper pin. If you crawl under the car and look up between the firewall and the back of the engine, you will see where the selector shaft exits the bodyjust above the steering rack: there is a small bushing of some sort connecting the transmission to the business end of things. It looks like a rubber puck, but as your car is older, it might be of a slightly different style. Anyway, there is a pin on each side of the bushing, and you will want to remove the one closest to the firewall- Have fun. I remember someone gave a great tip on this bb about how to get the damn thing out. Undo the nut on the one end of the pin, and on the other place a bigger nut that will fit loosely , but extend past the pin. Then take a pair of vice-grips and clamp the threaded end of the pin with the end you put a nut over. The idea is to put even pressure on the pin to prevent it from bending or anything, but slowly popping it out towards the big nut. It WILL be difficult.
All of that said, I am not terribly sure you have to take it all of the way out to change the lock, but I wouldnt really know. Anyone else know about this? Hope this helps.
