To be honest, I don't know what a total metal gear sounds like yet. Last year my engine ran not so smooth and my mechanic thought it might be worn out gearwheels because they sounded quite noisy to him. So I removed the nose (it was on the Sonett), radiator and engine front plate and found a set of very new looking gearwheels. The crankgear was all metal but the other two gears were metal with an outside ring of nylon (or whatever) in which the teeth were cut out. So I guess the full metal version is still a bit noisier, but I don't think you will really notice the difference inside.
