First of all, understand that these transmissions sometimes can be a bit tempermental about going into first gear. I used to find that it worked to bounce off of second and back into first. 99 transmissions are the same way. That said...

It sounds like you may be having some internal bleed-by in the clutch master. It's allowing the clutch to partially engage when you think it's fully disengaged. Does it grind if you try to go into reverse? Do you usually sit with your foot on the clutch pedal at a traffic light? DON'T do that. Take it out of gear when you come to a stop and take your foot off the clutch. Push the clutch in just before you have to engage the gears. If you have your foot on the clutch the whole time you are stopped, it has a lot of prassure in the system and it's more likely to bleed fluid past the piston. How long has it been since the clutch master and slave were rebuilt? They should be rebuilt or replaced. Brake and clutch fliuds should be changed regularly. See your service manual for the interval. (I think it's two years.) Alsobe sure to change gear oil every 6,000 miles. This is important to keeping the bearings clean and extends the life of the transmission.
