The engines are basically the same. There are differences in where peripherals are mounted. e.g. I don't remember the 99 having the AC compressor in the "V" of the right engine mount. Seems to me that's where it was on my '79 900 GLE. (It has been over 20 years since my ex-wife totatlled the car, so pardon the memory lapse.) All the 99 AC installations I remember had the AC mounted on beefy brackets that were added to the passenger's side of the engine, near the firewall. The mounts themselves were different, but the mounts use the same bolt locations. The transmission mount under the radiator is different and I think swapping a 900 transmission into a 99 requires swapping the transfer case cover. Without looking up specific part number comparisons, the CIS injection system is virtually the same.

APC was introduced midway through the '82 model year. My ex- had a '82 Turbo that was not an APC car.
