Convertible top stalling

So, I've done a little googling, but haven't been able to find anything that sounds like my latest Saab issue.
I have a 1996 900S convertible. Recently, the convertible top has been stalling about halfway through the opening process. Not only does it stop, but it makes a loud, high-pitched, kind of grinding sound (errrrrrrr!).
Any advice?
Being the budget minded student that I am, I'm hesitant to bring it into the shop and have them charge me some inspection fee and let me know that the price to fix it is something that I can't afford (can I say that I have not been thrilled with *any* of the shops I've been to in the Bay Area -- including Dirito Bros, where I bought my car and the shop I like the least, Oakland's Downtown Saab, Saab Planet in SF, and B&B Saab in Santa Clara -- and this is back when I had the GM warranty that covered everything, so I didn't even care about price!).
Maybe I (or my dad) can fix this myself?
Or, sadly, just drive with the top always down....
Any help suggestions would be appreciated!!!
