Hi SAAB friends,
I recently moved to San Francisco and have an 87 SPG with 209k miles(my third SAAB). Recently had a problem (which I'll explain below). The car won't run is in a garage near Geary and 30th Ave in the Richmond. Any recommendations on good Saab mechanic not too far from it. I do not know any in SF and I really would like to get this SPG back on the road.
Speculations on what is wrong are welcome. Here's what happened. I was driving in the city and my rear wheel hit a pothole at about 35 mph (it wasn't a huge pothole but gave the rear of the car a decent jolt), then about two seconds later I see the tach needle goto zero and engine cuts out. I shift into neutral and while still rolling and try to restart engine. It starts again, but dies again a few seconds later. THen I try to start it again and after about three tries it turns over and the engine revs wildly up to 4000 rpm then down to 1000rpm then up and down, then it dies. All this up and down in a matter of seconds and without my foot changing the pressure on gas pedal. I pull over and try to start it about 15 different times over 15 minutes. Recently put a new starter in, and could hear it working fine, but the engine wouldn't turn over except for two very brief times. Those two times the engine turned over it did the crazy up and down between 1000 and 4000 rpm as if I were playing with the gas pedal, but without me actually changing any pressure on the gas pedal.
Finally had the car towed home to my garage.
thanks in advance for any suggestions.
