is my mechanic screwing me?

I just bought a 1995 covertible 900s. On saturday it refused to go into reverse. I took it to the mechanic. He says I need a new transmission. With parts and labor it should come to between $1200 and $1300. he ordered the new transmission and is asking me to pay for the part up front. I told him that seemed odd and that I am not comfortable paying for anything until the work is done. He said they don't work that way. Does anyone have any suggestion for somewhere less shady?
