All information is considered correct unless otherwise. I'll do my best. I was reading a lot about Saabs and wanted one for about 5 years. Finally our family is getting 9-5 Wagon 2.3 automatic.
So here are my best guesses:
TRIMS:
19xx-2001 : no designation - base model
SE - more features, V6 was standard later
2001- ongoing : Linear - former base model
Arc - luxury oriented models
Aero - performance oriented models (suspension, engines)
Originally GM bought part of Saab in early nineties. GM900 (year model 1993 and up) was using some parts from european Opel cars. I'm not sure about the platform. 4 cylinder engines are pure Saab. The original V6 is british made GM and should be avoided. It changed I believe with 9-5, from 1999 they made big deal of modifications to it and should be ok.
In or around 1999 GM bought the rest of the company. Saab 9-5 is based on Opel Vectra platform and was introduced in Europe in 1997. It came to U.S. in 1999. The original big Saab 9000 was developed together with FIAT and Alfa Romeo. But overall the cars had little in common. With renaming 900 to 9-3 they made a lot of improvements to it.
It really boils down to for what you are going to use the car, how much trunk space do you need etc. If you are on tight budget I would pick some good low mileage 9000 as they tend to be more reliable than 900. If you are shooting around $10,000 go and get 9-5.
Just my 2 cents.
Radek
