If it had been a newer Volvo engine it would have been very likely since the serpentine belt finds its way into the timing belt and ruins the engine.
I have also heard about BMW engines where the serpentine belt managed to work its way in through the crankshaft seal and get tangled in timing chain.
I would more suspect that you overheated the life out of the engine by driving it with no working water pump.
Do you remember/checked if the coolant tank was still full of coolant when the engine stopped running on you?
