Anyone with an MDI? Posted by bobc [Email] (#473) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bobc) on Wed, 28 Apr 2021 12:23:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The patient is a 2011 Aero, 99k mi.
I'm a long time saab owner and member, but new to the NG95. The car is my daughter's. It has been, and is, a fantastic car. we completed a 2700 mile road trip 4 days ago, the car was flawless and a true pleasure to drive.
The HID headlamps have AFL (adaptive forward lighting, they turn and point into the curves) and are self leveling.
Just today it is displaying two messages on the SID:
- "service AFL lamp"
- "headlight leveling malfunction".
The issue is rapidly intermittent. The message appears, the headlights lock in the default position, then in a few seconds, the message clears and headlights go back to normal, pointing into the curves and leveling. Then it repeats, about 5 times a minute.
When the message appears the headlights lock in a reasonable position, they are not pointing crazy or wonky. so the car is 100% usable and safe at night.
I have a Tech 2 for the my other cars (OG 9-5s) but of course that is no use on this car.
I see there are a number of leveling sensors and a control module. I have a Tech 2 for my other cars, but that wont help on this car. I assume I'd need an MDI to read the data and narrow down the exact failure.
Two questions:
- does anyone I have an MDI? I see a few (clones?) from $150-$250. are they worth it?
- Any obvious things that I can check without an MDI to diagnose the cause of this message?
