I think the plastic guide for the reverse lock also forms the guide to 5th. The dreaded previous owner (or one of their friends) may have broken it or disabled it entirely. People have asked about how to do that in the past.
Now, there is a linkage issue 94-96 (97?) with a bushing that doesn't like to stay put, but that generally misplaces 5 and R entirely and makes finding 1 and 2 a crapshoot. But that 'feels' obviously broken, doesn't sound like your problem. Alignment is also an issue but it would have effects all over the pattern.
