So, double checking here.
Shifter in neutral and clutch up. How does your engine act? Does it turn over, but without firing? Or, does it refuse to even turn?
If you put the car in neutral (verified to be in neutral even, by pushing the car on a flat surface), and start it (clutch down of course) then let go of the clutch - does the engine simply die?
If so, this sounds like an electric problem. The only thing I can think of is that your car might have a switch on your clutch pedal (if you have cruise control). I have no idea what this switch could be shorting out or how, but it's really the only possible culprit in this case, one way or another.
You have a 2.3i right? Not a Turbo?
Another thing: When you said your car refused to go into 5th gear, exactly what did you mean?? Did the lever actually not move into the slot where 5th should be, or did you mean that it died?
