Well, the time has come. Driving home yesterday it all of a sudden started going into gear weird and then a horrendus grinding noise when the clutch was put in and in gear. In neutral, no noise, but I really had to start forcing it against the grinding to get it in any gear. I kept it in second and limped home to my garage (side streets).

I found the clutch estimates by anders from July 23, 2003. (see link below)

Questions are as follows:

1. KEY QUESTION: Good Indy in Minneapolis / St. Paul area? I know of Andrew's Saab, but anyother recommendations directly in the twin cities? I want someone w/ attention to detail that will do it right. Anders, think of moving north?

2. With it as it is, do i tow it in order to avoid any further damage?

3. Tranny seals are a must, w/ rear main engine seal.

4. How far do I go? What about pulling the whole engine/tranny and getting rid of the balance chain? Again, I have sludge issues I am battling (but hope to win.... it doesn't use oil at this time, and all performance is good... but I believe the timing chain is a bit loose .. do I have this inspected, too?) Any price estimates on making the job more thorough would be very appreciated. Any other advice?

I would like to keep the car, but how far do I go? Maybe I get it all working and trade it off. But then I wouldn't be assured of a new clutch, etc. I will probably pay to keep it, and want to do whatever is most efficient with the tranny already needing to be pulled. Upgrade shifter linkage? (if pull engine: head gasket? seals? pull oil pan, check sludge, clean pickup screen?)

let me know some advice on these questions. I have looked at previous posts, and am trying to assimilate a consensus, but it is certainly more clear when trying to address my specific problems. thanks.
