My '96 900 has even more rust than yours. Both doors (coupe model) have rust all along the bottoms. The hatch has significant rust along the bottom edge. And the fuel door also has rust. Along with this, stone chips have rusted the hood edge, and I've had nicks cause rust above the window on the driver's door. I repaint all the trouble spots every spring. I live in Halifax where salt is used for 5 or 6 months of the year, and my home town Pugwash has a salt mine that supplies all the road salt for Atlantic Canada. I do find that my car holds up worse than many other brands. I didn't own the car for it's first 5 years, and I'm fairly sure that the original owner did not take car of the paint. I doubt it was ever even waxed before I owned it. My immola red is orangey in colour now.
NickR - you live in Montreal, right? Those are horrible winters to put your car through.
On the plus side - the engine pulls as strongly as ever and it puts a grin on my face everytime I mash the accelerator. Who cares how bad the car looks...
