I was working on getting my ACC fan out to oil it as it was very noisy (thanks for all the input on that, everyone!). In the process, however, I broke a small piece off of the unit. I took off the bullseye cover of the fan. There in the center of the unit, right out in front, was what looked like a resistor sticking out in front of the fan. As I was using my credit card to press in the tabs on the top and bottom that hold the fan unit in place, one of the cards came loose and struck the resistor-looking-thing. As the fan is designed to draw air from the cabin across a thermometer, I imagine the piece I broke off was the thermometer itself. Am I right?
I continued my project just to see if the oil worked. Sure enough, I oiled the fan as instructed and it is absolutely silent. So then I replaced the unit and tried to test it. I set the temp to 64 degrees (it was about 55 outside). The air circulation never did go down and the car continued to get warmer and warmer. The ACC fan continued to function normally. It shut off after a few minutes after killing the engine. I guess I want to make sure that I have to replace the ACC fan now, and it'd be nice to know what that piece is just for the sake of knowledge. What a bummer. By acting in haste to make the quick, free repair that would save me $65, I now have to spend $65. Haste made waste for me.
