timing chain noise

hey guys!
some of you know that i have recently put a fully built motor in my 1996 900.
i finally have everything all together and the car is back on the road.
during the engine build, i had the crankshaft balanced without using the balance shafts in order to reduce weight on the rotating mass. when idling, or even with the throttle open, i hear noise coming from the timing side of the engine in the valve cover. definitely sounds like chain.
things to keep in mind:
The cams are perfectly timed with the crank.
The timing chain tensioner is in securely and the chain is the right tension.
The sprockets are secured on the camshafts.
After having driven the car a few miles after reassembly, i decided to pull the valve cover off to double check things, and everything checks out OK.
I put a brand new chain on while the engine was apart. Could it be the chain needs to be broken in?
I am baffled as to what is causing this noise.
Thanks in advance!
Matt
