The exhaust manifold will expand and contract with the heat of differing power demands. The studs need to be tight enough to stop gross leaks, but loose enought to not over constrain things. The forces can break the studs. I have a feather of soot on my head on my 03 9-5 Aero. So I figure that things are loose enough where that is happening. Studs that are too tight are going to crack the manifold or break the studs. Something has to give.
