Sorry I haven't responded sooner, but your suggestions have me looking at the wiring more closely.But here are the answers to the questions you asked:

What happens to the radio, dash and guages and sid? They don't go crazy and jump all over the place as I've seen on a bad battery cable on my classic 900. They work as normal... and when I try to restart the engine and it says check OK. NO codes come up at all and the SID doesn't go through the checking sequence until I try to restart the engine. The mechanic tested the battery and the alternator is charging as normal.

No electrical recent electrical work done. I had the ECU replaced almost 4 years ago when it was on warranty. The only frayed wires I have noticed so far are on the cooling fan motor. Could this be the problem? Thanks for the response and I'llbe working on it this weekend to see if I can find a ground problem.
