So I purchase my 94 900s with 57k miles on it a couple weeks ago and have gone through it pretty thoroughly. I had posted earlier about a problem with my reverse popping out intermittently, and many on this forum suggested replacing the linkage. I installed the upgraded linkage tonight and I am happy to say that my shifter no longer pops out of reverse!
The funny thing is, I didn't notice how bad the shifting was in the other forward gears until I put the new linkage in. I had thought that Saabs just shifted a little stiff - another quirk right? Wrong. Before the linkage upgrade, it took a definite effort to move the gear shift and I'd often have problems getting into fifth. With the upgraded linkage, I can shift with two fingers - the feeling is much more precise and crisp as well. I love it!
The linkage install was relatively easy - it actually took longer to do the valve cover replacement. The only thing that scared me was sawing off the old bushing mount off of the rear engine mount (wary of sawing pieces of the engine off). The Haynes manual is actually incorrect in what you have to remove in order to do the upgrade - the manual says you have to remove the front seat and the gear change housing - when all you have to do is remove the rubber boot around the gear shift.
So far I've done the following maintenance on the car:
1)upgraded linkage
2)fixed valve cover leak (new gasket)
3)retorqued head cylinder bolts
4)fixed distributor leak (new gasket)
5)fixed thermostat housing leak (new gasket)
6)replaced upper idler pulley and did short belt mod
7)replaced heater core hoses
Total cost in parts: $300
Total savings by DIY: around $1000
