It's sounding alot like the clutch, especially given the miles.
If the revs are going up in 2nd when you're feeling the dead spot, that's clutch. Another telltale sign is having to stand on the clutch pedal to do anything. They get progressively more balky. That's assuming the cable hasn't malfunctioned in some way -- search for 'cable adjustment', there's a quick procedure to reset it and maybe rule it out.
The 95 (94-97) shift linkage goes wonky with age, you can search for that on the board, but the symptoms are a little different.
I think you get lots of gear whine if it's low on lube, it doesn't sound like the case. Noise sounds, on a hunch, like a shaky throwout bearing.
If you do get a clutch, it's a good idea to do the rear main seal and axle seals while the box is out. Saab released a synth gear lube for the box, get that in there, too. (Original oil will need to be changed by now). A good independent shop will beat dealer cost by at least a couple hundred bucks on the job.
