Rear main and axle seals is standard operating procedure in the NG tho I don't think the 9-3 had the axle seal problem.
The shaft isn't supposed to wear (in the lifetime of the box), sez here thin coat of Molycote Rapid G for the splines.
Got the newer linkage? (Forgot to check your old posts, I should remember if you do or not... ;)
