I changed two of the wheels that the serpentine belt runs around this weekend. I noticed that the top left (when looking at the belt from the left side of the car) was worn and a piece of the wheel had cracked off. Those of you who have had this belt break in the past know what a pain it is, so I didn't want that to happen again (not to mention how pricey the damn belt was in the first place!).
Anyway, since I was changing out the top left wheel, I thought that the next one in line (perhaps the wheels that the short belt mod nulifies?) should be changed as well.
This was a snap.
After ordering the wheels, I got a 20 inch breker bar/socket extn and inserted it into the slot right behind the first wheel. Pulling this toward the engine relieved tension on the belt, and inserting a small screwdriver in the perpendicular holes will keep the tension off. When you find where to insert the breaker bar, you will know what I mean.
The first wheel was done in 30 seconds... the second one was much harder. Saab put this bolt in there and it has about zero room between the chasis of the car and the bolt itself. You have to angle the bolt within the wheel to get it into place. This took the most time.
Anyway- a good installation, didn't take too long and saved the cash that a mechanic would have charged. Next up- changing out the broken antenna unit in the back of the car!
