I'm starting to think that mechanic's invented the idea of "warped rotors" to screw people out of unnessecary brake jobs. As is mentioned in the article, I believe the author mentions never witnessing warped rotors on a street car.
I used to fall for the "warped rotors" diagnosis all the time too. Now I realize...its usually build up that just needs to get "cooked" off. And its the city driving that causes the build up as the brakes get very hot...and soften...what do you do? You sit at a light with your foot jammed on the brakes. Naturally some transfer occurs and next time you stop its uneven ("catching sensation") and the wheel shimmies when braking at higher speeds.
I was on the verge of sending my car in for a brake job until I read this article. Now, when I feel some build up, I safely perform a few short hard stops (keep the car in neutral at lights) and voila, its back to normal. (Off ramps work well too.)
