So I took my tranny out to have it rebuilt last week and thought I'd write up my experience for your benefit - hopefully you won't make the same mistakes I did :)

I was having several problems; reverse would crunch going in, leaking driveshaft seals on the passenger and driver side, and a leaking selector shaft seal along with a scored selector rod from a botched seal replacement attempt.

I followed a couple different sources, but found the Haynes manual to be surprisingly helpful - taking the tranny off is as easy as removing the subframe and exhaust, dropping the engine/tranny assembly with an engine boom and taking off five bolts - although doing the entire removal took something like 15 hours for me to do alone. I'm confident that if I were to do it again, I could do the job in half the time.

Brought the tranny over to Scanwest and they did a pretty thorough rebuild - replaced both driveshaft bushings, driver side driveshaft seal, reverse synchro (it was worn down almost to nothing - this is why it was grinding going into reverse), new selector shaft, bushing and seal. Total bill came out to $650, but a rebuilt one would have cost about $1600 so I figure I still came out ahead.

While I was at it, I put in a new clutch and release bearing - the flywheel was in good shape so I didn't bother getting it machined. Also put in a manually adjustable clutch cable - all of a sudden the clutch engages really high! Weird feeling after having to press it all the way to the floor to disengage. I was also have problems with front end vibration on braking so I put in new rotors and brake pads as well.

All told - I spent a bit over $1000 for the tranny rebuild, clutch, cable, rotors and pads - which does hurt a little bit. But, I figure I now have a car that almost as good as new with the exception of the suspension. Also I figure I saved around $1000 in labor for the clutch, $100 for the clutch cable, $200 for the brakes and rotors - figuring that in - it's not so bad.

I figure in a year's time I'll spring for new front struts and the updated control arms - maybe I'll throw in a steering brace in the meantime - anyone had any experiences with this?
