drifting while braking

When I brake to come to a complete stop at a traffic light, my 96 900SET drifts to the right to the point that if I wasn't pulling back on the steering wheel I'd wind up in another lane. (I'm not sure yet whether the car drifts while driving, as the roads I drive on are so bad it's a little difficult to tell.) I'm going to have the problem looked at by an indie, but what should I be prepared for? Does this sound like a wheel alignment issue? Uneven break wear? How much should I expect to pay to fix this?
Thanks in advance.
