If the engine oil was changed regularly every 10-15,000 miles, and a layer of sludge/varnish/gunk built up on the seals, the seals would dry out. Then changine to synthetic, or another brand of non-synthetic, could result in the false seal being washed away. Bingo, the dried up seal doesn't work, and oil leaks. In today's world, with the much improved non-synthetic oils, this is not usually a problem. In the past 25 years of using and selling AMSOIL, I can remember about 3 or 4 cars which leaked badly after changing over. None of them had been well maintained before the change.
If there is an existing leak, keep in mind that synthetic oil is not a mechanic-in-a-can. It doesn't replace missing seal or gasket material. It doesn't fix broken windshields. It doesn't prevent someone from rear-ending you at the light.
Having said that, I noticed, when I last changed oil in my 88 9000
Turbo, that there was a light coating of oil on the bottom of the front of the engine. So I do have a slight leak. However, I've run over 3500 miles since then, and haven't added any oil. So I guess the leak isn't serious, at least not yet. I guess a seepage at 140K isn't too bad.
