Standard wisdom here is that a stiff clutch is one that is almost worn out, but several of us have had major improvements in clutch effort and feel from replacing just the cable. Worth trying at the DIY price of $45 or so, but at the shop price of $150-200 the money is probably better put towards a new clutch. However you mechanic may be oversimplifying when he says you can drive the clutch as long as you can tolerate the effort - as the clutch gets stiffer, the load on the cable increases, and breakage becomes more and more likely.
BTW, the C900s are the coolest cars in the world when it comes to the clutch - I drove them for years without realizing it, dreading the clutches going. Turned out you can do one in about 2 hours, without ever getting under the car or having to assume an awkward position, since then I've done 3, chuckling all the time. Our NG900 is an OK car, but I think the C900 is a great one.
