Burning Oil!!! What's wrong? (not coolant)

Hi folks!
My '95 900SE-T is burning oil... didn't believe it, but saw it today after mechanic changed clutch and said seals were ok and couldn't spot leaks under car. I noticed after about 5 mins., getting out of the car and looking at the exhaust, I could see the exhaust fumes and smelled oil burning (it was warm here today, no reason to see anything). Upon arriving home, (35 min. drive) exhaust had cleared and smelled relatively ok. I phoned mechanic and he said that the plugs needed to be checked to see if it was from the engine or the turbo. I've needed to add about 2 quarts in the last 2500 miles. I had a valve gasket changed about 4 months ago because of a leak, other mechanic. Any link there?
If I looked at the plugs myself, could I know for sure that they were unusually dirty (not much of a DIYer)? If they looked bad (they have about 10000 miles on them), what would it mean? If they are clean, does it mean I have a turbo problem?
Thanks for your help, it's much appreciated!
