After a month in the shop (I like to walk---really) and emails sent to the mechanic from posts on this list, the problem has been found. Six months earlier, while driving thru LA, my right rear tire blew and cut a slash in the tube that carries the gas from the intake to the tank. The Sherman Oaks dealer replaced that tube but neither they nor I thought of cleaning out the fuel tank. Six months later all the tire and tube bits have turned to jelly in the gasoline and are stopping up the fuel pump.
Now, the mechanic should have thought of the "hammer on the fuel tank" trick when I first drove in there. Instead he replaced the DIC. And when the problem re-appeared he tried every other solution posted on this list. Then he hammered on the fuel tank near the fuel pump and the car springs back to life. The pump was replaced and a handful of sludge removed from the fuel tank.
I took it on a 70 mile test drive today in 88 degree F weather and it seemed fine. The only thing is it was getting about 30mpg instead of the 35-36 I would normally expect. I put Techron in for the first time before the test drive. Maybe things will eventually be back to normal. Nice to have a car you can count on, though (knock on wood).
