Your assumption is correct but it is also several more parameters to take into account.

The tip of the pressure plate fingers wear down. The flat surface of throwout bearing hollows out from the wear of the fingers. Pressure plate fingers fade with each clutch operation and bend slightly toward flywheel.

Those three parameters might be enough to account for an additional 3-4 mm freeplay.

I have no experiance of a hydraulic conversions so I can't say and I haven't replace many clutches on the 98 900 since we mostly see auto here in LA.

I did however have a problem with when trying the Scantech manual clutch cable that was related to a worn clutch.

The Scantech cable is not long enough (even when adjuster is fully released) to accomandate a worn clutch so I couldn't get the cable over the clutch arm and have enough freeplay left so that the clutch wouldn't slip.
