Anders,
I am the other '94 900S owner that RonT refers to in his posting. Last weekend, I did exactly what you suggested. I located the main fuel pump relay, and presently have a light bulb connected across the relay coil. To operate, the relay needs a ground from the ECU (on my car, it's a white wire), and it needs juice from the adjacent relay, which appears to be tied into the ignition. (I'm not really sure of it's purpose, but the relay is activated by a blu/red wire that goes to ground when the ignition switch is ON). Both the fuel pump relay and the 'mystery relay' get 12 volts from separate big orange wires. These 12v feeds are hot even when the ignition switch is off. Might the blu/red wire run to the ignition switch on the floor??
I have also connected a momentary n/o push-button switch that grounds the white ECU wire. This will override the signal from the ECU calling for fuel. My theory is that the next time I get stranded with my no-start problem, I'll be able to push the button and force the fuel pump on.
I also opened up the fuel pump relay and burnished the contacts. There was a little bit of carbon, but the relay seems quite OK.
Now I just have to wait for the next incident and see what my light bulbs tell me.
