This is a follow up to the recent posting: Infinity Kappa 3.5" speakers
When replacing the stock speakers is important to identify the correct polarity of the speaker wires. The wires of my 97 SET have a color code that does not make sense unless one has the proper wiring diagram. The stock speakers also have no polarity indicated so there is no way to tell which is positive and which is negative.
Under the wrong assumption that the wire with a colored stripe was the positive I connected one of the Kappa to the left channel and left the stock speaker in the right channel. By swinging the balance control I checked the performance difference of the two speakers and noticed hardly any difference. After following the below procedure I changed the polarity of the Kappa and noticed a substantial improvement in comparison with the stock speaker. In the instruction manual for the Kappas the polarity is indicated and must be followed.
To identify the wires polarity I proceeded as follows:
-Remove one of the stock speaker and connect it to a 1.5 V battery. Depending on the polarity of the battery the woofer will move in or out and stay there when the connection is made. Connected the speaker to the battery so that the woofer moves out. See where the positive and negative of the battery go on the speaker and mark it on speaker connector.
-Since the connector can only go on the speaker in one way and as we now know the polarity of the speakers is now easy to identify the polarity of the wires. Just see which lead connects where.
