CV axle U-joint - FYI?

Refer to my earlier posting regarding "CV or Brakes".
Took my 97 900SE to JAX Foreign Auto. Test drive with the owner yielded a diagnosis of a bad U-joint on the CV axle, possibly a bad bearing. Quote was $360 per side to replace the u-joint and rebuild axle, additional $160 to replace the bearing.
Upside - $360 makes the noise go away. Downside - could end up being both CVs & Bearings - about $1200 after alignment.
Anybody wanna chime in on this?
