Hello all,
1996 900SEt, 192k miles.
I'm in the process of changing my oil (at work where it's warm, since it's 5 deg F out) and noticed a drop of oil under the bell housing when I jacked the car up. Sure enough it's dripping from the bell housing. Judging by smell, it's engine oil, not gear lube, and from what I gather on the archives, that is a rear main seal. (please correct me if I'm wrong).
How important is it to get that taken care of right away? Can it go on the back burner? What are the negative effects if not dealt with? I keep the oil level where it should be, and change oil every 3k miles. I don't seem to be using/losing any oil. Clutch is in strong shape, as is tranny - so other than the oil leak, there is no driver to tear the car down. Unless the oil leak has negative repercussions, I'd like to let it go until I need clutch/tranny work, or the leak gets worse.
Thoughts? Input? Is that a stupid idea?
Thanks
jesse
