Yesterday night at 10 pm we had a heat wave and it got to 34 degrees outside. I had time, and got out there and replaced the sensor. It then fired right up, but did sputter and die 2 times before running good. Now, I term this a "success" because it had not been firing at all as of late. It ran real well, too. I don't recall my car running so well (but maybe I have just missed it as of late). I also seemed to notice improved gas mileage.
The major thing of note is that the old CPS had fine metal filings on the sensor. I am guessing it had been magnetized due to the continual rotation of the crankshaft. Now, I am guessing that these filings prevented an accurate signal. They were definitely obstructing it a certain degree. I also remember my plugs have continually been black and oily, as if it has been running "rich". Also could be due to inaccurate CPS readings (?).
Now, the weather is about 20. I usually had problems at this temp, and it has started on the first attempt all 4 times today. Am I completely confident yet? No. A few more weeks of GREAT starting will give me more confidence. You have to appreciate that it has been well over a year that I have had this intermittent problem.
By the way, the resistance reading on the NEW sensor was 890 ohms, where the old one was 750 or so. The spec says 540 +- 40, so maybe my voltmeter is not doing its job... but I am guessing my old sensor was "good" (but had to break it to remove it), but that is was simply obstructed. I am guessing the filings are from residual sludge clean up I was taking care of last year. Again, if sensor were magnitized, it would not have rinsed free when doing the auto-rx treatment. But, have I burned a bearing or is my balance chain about to go? Other input would be great.
good luck to all other hard starters out there. I am now adding "swab off the crank sensor" to my list of things to address hard start issues.
