I sent my daughter off to drive coast to coast with a fairly comprehesive tool kit, dist cap and rotor, spark plugs, and a couple spare spark plug wires (all used stuff I'd replaced, but useful for emergency repairs & diagnosis), Little 12V compressor, can of flat fix, can ofBarsleak, hose bandage, spare gas cap, 3 quarts oil, gallon jug of water, clutch cable, hook tool and detailed directions for replacing the cable, the old "sarpent" belt and idler, big spool of wire, some hose clamps, muffler clamps and bits of sheet metal (for patching exhaust system) and a Haynes manual.
Idea being that she might not be able to fix something, but it would be enough that a local shop or helpful friend might be able to without having to wait for parts, or that I could do a long range diagnosis and maybe repair by telephone.
I had a break down that left me stranded several hundred miles from home in our C900 a while back, on a friday night, and realized how helpless one is these days with even a simple prob - AAA only tows, does no minor repairs/troubleshooting, and there are virtually no shops open anymore from 5pm friday till morning Monday. The only thing AAA could do was tow me to the Saab dealer, and leave me to wait there until Monday! My prob turned out to be a bad distributor rotor - easily diagnosed and fixed, but not in the pouring rain when you have gotten out of the habit of carrying spares!
