You say pieces of the rubber gasket inside.
I wouldn't be surprised if those pieces got in between the sprocket and belt, lifting the belt enough to make it skip timing and destroying the engine.
What you need to do is to turn the engine by hand with timing cover off and study the timing marks.
That way you know foer sure if the belt has skipped or not.
