See previous posts by me "iveand" or "Richard". Richard has a turbo, so issues may be different, but here is what I ended up doing (it has been working well the past few weeks after not being able to start it in the cold EXACTLY as you describe).
IAC cleaning, new plugs, techron did not help me. I ended up replacing my crankshaft position sensor (or CPS or CKP Sensor), and there was a noticible improvement. Usually these fail hot, but it seemed like everything was pointing to it. It cost $40 on eeuroparts.
Richard has been tracking down possible problems with CKP Sensor and or RELAYS (Main relay or Fuel pump relay, possibly). PLease look up old posts on this (search for my name if you want .. I always include it in messages for this reason). There are fairly simple tests you can do to see if you fuel pump is being told to work (if voltage at fuse 32, then relay is good for instance). You can also "hotwire" the fuel pump to verify it itself is good.
I am not 100% confident in my car yet, but I have the volt meter handy should I have problems again to try and debug.
I can write more if you feel like this direction may be helpful. IT seems from all I have researched that the start and die start and die cycle is caused by some fuel related problem (as opposed to spark, air). Again, my car runs perfect after finally starting, so, the relay stuff is possible (mechanical contact that may have problems with cold?)
Please keep posting updates as I have a vested interest myself in seeing if we can work this out together.
