Dean's advice is the place to start. There have been others that have been trying to sort out similar problems (me in particular, but I have a non-turbo). Richard (search for posts by him) is tracking down problems in his turbo. For both he and me, it seems as if it may possibly be related to either: relays (main and or fuel pump relay), and or Crank Position Sensor (CKP Sensor or CPS). These problems of the car starting then dying, starting, dying, and then finally holding seem to be fuel related, in my opinion. The intermittent nature of it is what is frustrating, and both Richard and I seem (and you!) to experience it in this intermittent way. To verify it is not your fuel pump, you can "hotwire" it (fuse 32). If you hear fuel rushing around the throttle body, then it is not the fuel pump. I know this is all a bit much to sort out right now, so please read up on some previous threads to try and get into this problem.
There are quite a few recent posts on a lot of this stuff if you search on some of the terms above, but again, the "basics" as outlined by Dean are a good place to start. My name "iveand" may possibly be a good search term, as I have tried to stay active on other threads with starting problems lately, and I always include my name in posts. (I just am suggesting this because it may get you to relevant posts -- I by NO MEANS am making statements about my expertize in this area, as I would again mention that the "staples" of this board, namely Dean and Swedecar and a host of others are much more the authorities on these cars).
GOOD LUCK! If something seems possible, it may be worth mentioning some of these possibilities to your mechanic.
