The fuse checks out okay. BTW, the fuse is reported to be for seta heaters and central locking. But with the fuse removed, locking still works. Also, with the fuse removed the button illumination is different (off=dim, on=dark vs. normal off=dim, on=bright).

My hunch is what you described -- once I fixed the break, current was able to flow again, hence burning out another "hot spot". I wasn't in a mood to do any more testing last night, but next time I get around to it I expect to find the heater wire broken again.

Unfortunately this is an unstable process : as any spot begins to weaken, its resistance goes up, causing it to heat up more, causing its resistance to go up further, ..., bzzzt. Even though the total heat produced goes down (P=V^2/R) the local heating at the fault goes up.

(Q: What is the voltage applied to the seat heaters ? Is it 12 V ? That would be about 90-100 W of power, which sounds reasonable. Until it gets concentrated on one spot...)

Also, does anybody know how the thermostat circuit works ? Where in the seat is the thermostat ? Is is a variable reisitance, open/close switch, etc. ? Has anyone ever had a seat heater failure due to the thermostat ?

I've got goodies coming in the mail (exhaust, hoses, water pump, etc.) so I may not tackle the seat issue right away, but some day I *do* plan to fix this ...

Thx,
jeff
