On modern cars with electronic/computerized gauges they use a delay or low/high value for the gauges.

If you have ever driven an old Saab 96 with 1/4 of a gas tank you will know what I'm talking about, the needle is all over the spectrum from the splashing gas.

As for the temp gauge in NG900 and up cars, Saab have a min and max value programmed into the computer where the needle is suppose to be in the middle. When the temp climbs over the max value the needle suddenly jumps up to 3/4 of the gauge and stays there. If the temp keeps climbing the needle jumps up to the red zone after awhile.

You can prgram these values with a Tech 2 scanner and make the min/max band narrower or broader within a certain range.

The reasoning for having this min/max (in the middle needle) is that some drivers complain about if the needle is a tad below center or a tad above center while under different driving conditions or hot/cold climates.

This way the needle stays centered under most normal driving conditions and the driver is happy.
