... often the entire alternator assembly is not in need of replacement. Bosch bearing units seem to hold up well (but again there are cases of the bearings going as seen below, etc.) The wear and tear item, however is the voltage regulator mounted on the end of the alternator. The "brushes" here are what wear with friction, etc. There is a spring mechanism to keep good contact as they wear, but after so much wear, contact is not made very well before, hence the flickering voltage warning light when at lower RPM's, but OK charging when at driving RPM's.
I believe it is important to note because the regulator cost $70, and the alternator is $250 +. From a couple of saabs I have worked with, approx. 120K miles seems to be about the life of the regulator brushes, while I have not yet needed to replace an entire alternator assembly (145+ K miles)
