This does sound like an air leak. Check for any damage to VAC lines or to the air duct between the MAF and the throttle body. A weak fuel pump could do this, but then one would expect hard starting. Ditto for the fuel pressure regulator (FPR). If you have not cleaned your injectors lately, find a reputable fuel system cleaner (stronger and more thorough than basic injector cleaners) and run that through with a tank of fuel. If that restores operation, then I would expect that that would be what you need. If no major change, keep looking.

Check the plugs for condition and gap. You might have a problem with the TB and IAC that explains problems with idle speed control. Clean them both. IAC will need a strong carb cleaner spray... which can damage paint. So remove the IAC and clean at a distance from the vehicle. Search for 'clean IAC' to find further details and oil pivots in IAC and TB.

The evaportaive control system solenoid valve might be sticking open. Some have rescued these with solvent cleaners or penetrating oil spray products. And the large VAC line from that valve to the TB can be a problem. These age and harden, and crack at the fittings or split. Feel the lower surfaces that cannot be seen. The plastic plenum over the TB can be a problem. It has, two I think, O-rings to seal to the TB. If the plenum is not fitted right and the o-rings are miss-located, running problems will occur. Clean these o-rings and install with a film of petroleum jelly, silicone or wheel grease.

The O2-sensors on these models have their signal grounds though the exhaust systems and reseating the connectors can restore normal signal response. You can check for resistance from the sensor base to battery ground terminal with a digital multimeter. If resistance is found, you can trace where it occurs and reseat sensors or fasteners. Bighten metal as needed to get a good contact.

MAF could be bad or marginal. These can be cleaned with a plastics-safe electronic spay cleaner, but must not contain silicone or lubricants. But might not be the MAF.

Deal with the easy, simple and inexpesive things first.... plugs, cables, boots, cap, rotor, injectors, hoses etc.
