Got my '97 900 SE (113k mi) about 6 weeks ago at an auction. Nice cosmetic shape, but maintenance history unknown and plenty of salt spray and corrosion below. Lots of great help and ideas from saabnet !
Done so far :
* head gasket replaced at indy (ouch -- I shoulda noticed that !)
* all new hoses/tstat/pump on cooling system, and flush
* rear shocks and swaybar (Highly recommedned - cheap, easy, satisfying !)
* oil pressure sender - now my oil light works
* fix broken seat heater, re-insert loose power seat relay.
* replaced rusted-out exhaust, cat back. Can't hear the engine anymore !
* replaced old vacuum lines, PCV valve, host -- highly recommended
* switch to Mobil 1 0W40, bottle o' Techron
* new DI cassette, old one in box in trunk
* ordered short belt & pulley, but indy replaced these during head gassket work
Stuff I plan on doing fairly soon :
* Install front Bilstein HD inserts, strut bearings
* Replace brake fluid
* Replace turbo hose that is dry and cracking (got used one on Ebay)
* Track down goofy intermittent signal problem for turbo/tach gauges
* Thinking of pre-emptive replacement of fuel pump and *very* corroded gas tank straps.
* Check into A/C system. Not working now, don't know why.
Altogether, I'm still under $5k and is looking ready for another 100k mi. My biggest concern is the rust - cars don't rust much here in So. Colorado, but this baby grew up in Ohio.
