I've been through my fair share of antenna masts like crazy on my '96 900s. Well, last month the antenna motor started to work only intermittently & rather than the familiar retraction sound, it would sometimes stick & make a strained, low buzzing sound. I had to get behind the liner & jiggle the motor to get it to complete the retraction.
At any rate, as an intermediate fix, I extended the antenna half-mast & disconnected the motor. It works fine for me but I must say I'm in the LA basin, in a rather good radio reception area. I wasn't getting good reception with the antenna fully retracted though.
The $20 fixed antenna option (cited in the thread linked above) sounds appealing but I'm pretty happy as is. Just a thought.
