Nick - thanks for sharing your experience. the joint between the rear muffler and mid-pipe are new and "in theory" shouldn't need sealant, but as you say if it's not totally right you'll get some leaks. The one I'm more concerned about is the flex pipe to the mid-muffler pipe - where there's some irregularities in the flex pipe connection that I'm sure I'll be chasing leaks unless I do something. The idea with the silicone sealer was that, at a later date, if I need to replace the flex pipe, I'd like to get the new mid-muffler pipe off relatively easily. I'm trying to weigh whether it'd be easier if I used a silicone-type sealer or the hardening one you can get from pepboys (I have a tube of both). The hardening one claims you can crack it apart (and I'll have to admit, taking apart the old joint last night with the hardening type sealer from a previous effort did come apart with a few hard taps to the pipe) - but I'm just looking for real-life experiences.
The old system came out easily last night (almost too easily), and the parts from eEuroparts are coming today, so I should be able to button this thing up quickly - just need to decide which sealer to use.
BTW - did you use the sealer only on the outside, or also a bead on the edge that inserts into the other pipe?
thx - andy
